In socially conservative Vietnam, a group of LGBT Vietnamese anxiously await for the outcome of legislation that would legally allow for same sex marriage – a first in Asia.
Long Synopsis
In July 2012, the Vietnamese Communist government made an announcement - they were considering whether to allow same-sex couples to marry – becoming the first Asian country to do so. This was particularly shocking in a country where being gay was once labelled a “social evil” alongside drug addiction and resulted in jail sentences and cane whippings. “Save the Date” follows the potential legalization of same-sex marriage in Vietnam and traces the history of LGBT discrimination through the lives of several LGBT Vietnamese.
