Full schedule

In the second virtual edition of our BFI Doc Society regional event series (delivered as part of BFI NETWORK), we look forward to conversations with UK doc makers about the issues affecting them in a Covid-present landscape. This day-long event explores the ever-evolving situation for documentary production, commissioning (including the BFI Doc Society Fund) and releasing - what are the opportunities? How do we use our natural aptitude as doc-makers to engage new and nimble digital strategies? How do we keep connected as a sector? Hear creative case studies on what makes a great funding application, the magical creative editing process on feature docs and have a chat with the BFI Doc Society team and other sector experts.

AM Session (10am - 1pm GMT)

The 3hr morning session is focused towards new and emerging filmmakers: sessions cover the Made of Truth: BFI Doc Society Short Film Fund with grantee filmmakers Alice Aedy & Awa Farah (Somalinimo) and Eva-Grace Bor & Sorcha Bacon (Zero Zero), other commissioning opportunities (including Guardian Documentaries), the latest expertise in distribution and festival strategy for shorts and local opportunities and networks across the East Anglia Region for new and emerging filmmakers.

PM Session (2pm - 5pm GMT)

The 3hr afternoon session is focused towards independent UK feature documentary filmmakers and those working towards features. Sessions cover the BFI Doc Society Fund and what makes for a great application with the filmmakers of soon to be released doc feature Bank Job, treasures from the edit with editing aficionado David Charap and explore new horizons for distribution and audience engagement with Ani Mercedes (Founder & Film Impact Producer of Looky Looky Pictures), Eve Gabereau (Founder & CEO, Modern Films) and more.

Both sessions took place on Tuesday 24 November 2020. Although the two sessions are aimed at different levels of filmmaking experience, we encourage you to join for the whole day if you can.

Filmmaker 1-2-1 session

During the event there will be an opportunity to register for a 15 minute 1-2-1 session with our BFI Doc Society team and other sector experts - these 1-2-1 sessions will take place on Wednesday 25 November between 16:30-18:00 [GMT].

How do I participate?

We invite you into a shared, participatory virtual space together. This means you can ask questions and comment ‘in person’ and we encourage cameras on and networking with one another in the chat! Let’s connect. This event will be recorded.

Who is this event for?

This free convening is designed to help connect non-fiction filmmakers across the UK, especially those working in the regions and nations. Our “Local” focus for this edition will explore opportunities, networks and filmmakers working in the East Anglia Region. However, the doors are open to filmmakers from all corners of the UK, of all levels of experience and from all communities. So feel free to register and connect with your fellow documentary filmmakers.
